Dialogue sample for Inugami

[Regardless of working in a job where she greets tons of customers on a daily basis, offering up small talk and sending them out the door with their order, there was still something pretty unnerving about standing in front of a group of students with all eyes on her. What was she supposed to be doing again? Oh yeah, introducing herself.

Sadie smiles nervously, and gives an awkward wave.]

Uh, h-hey. My name's Sadie, I... wow, you really all are looking at me, huh. [She gives a small chuckle at that, but when no one else responds, she coughs and moves on.] I uh, work at a place called the Big Donut! I'll bet you can't guess what we sell there, heh.

[No laughs. Geez, tough crowd. It's times like this she could use Steven. If anyone could give her a good introduction, he probably could.]

Anyway, I've been working there for a couple of summers now. It's really not a bad place to work. It sure does get a lot of excitement, but I'm pretty used to it by now and... oh yeah! I'm a pretty big fan of horror movies. Not too many people would guess that about me when they first meet me.

I guess that's all the really the exciting stuff about me. ... It's really nice to meet you all! I hope we'll get a chance to be friends?

[She feels silly as she says it, and her face turns a faint shade of red. "I hope we'll get a chance to be friends?" C'mon Sadie, how cheesy can you get? She awkwardly marches back to her seat, wondering what she did to deserve going through that same high school embarrassment all over again.]

History:

Sadie is one of the human residents of Beach City. She works at the Big Donut with Lars, which is the restaurant where Steven Universe often frequents in his free time. Originally, Sadie starting working there as a summer job, but remained for another two years and counting. Her mother is Barbara, another Beach City resident who delivers the mail and still packs lunches for her daughter.

While Sadie goes about living a normal life in Beach City (as normal as she can get anyway), she occasionally gets caught up in strange happenings caused by Steven and the Crystal Gems. During "Island Adventure", Steven takes her and Lars on a getaway trip to help ease the tensions between them at work and stop their fighting. He ends up using the Crystal Gems' warp pad to take them to an island in the middle of nowhere. Sadie is enthusiastic at first, while Lars wants to go home right away. Unfortunately they all get stranded due to Steven losing the location of the warp pad to take them back home. This results in some pretty classic island adventures, with them learning how to survive in the wild and making their own supplies. But it also culminates into Lars and Sadie having a pretty deep heart-to-heart talk as the stress of being cut off from home gets to them, and it ends with them kissing. After being ambushed by a dangerous Gem monster, it's revealed that Sadie hid the warp pad and stranded them on purpose, thinking that the experience would be helpful to Lars. After fighting over it, Sadie pushes Lars and he ends up tumbling down where the Gem monster is, where it tries to attack him. Sadie battles it with a spear and wins, to which they all finally go home after several days of being both physically and emotionally exhausted.

And after that, Sadie gets roped into another strange phenomenon when she, Lars, Steven, and Ronaldo decide to watch scary movies together at a lighthouse. While the night starts off innocently, things take a turn for the spooky when the power shuts off and objects start flying around. When said objects start to attack them, Ronaldo thinks it's the work of a poltergeist and the group escapes down the stairs. As they try to make a run for it outside, they're attacked by scarecrows that try to break in from outside. After fighting them off, Lars tries to get Sadie to leave with him, which she refuses. She's then swallowed up by the floor as the group rushes to her rescue. Ronaldo almost sacrifices Lars for Sadie, thinking that the poltergeist is drawn to Lars, but Steven protects Lars by using his bubble shield. Sadie is rescued, and the lighthouse that has been attacking them turns out to be a Gem trapped inside the house that was trying to use its power to protect itself.

On a grander scale of things, Sadie, as well as other residents of Beach City usually experience weird and frightening situations due to having the Crystal Gems residing in the same city. Most recently, she was forced to evacuate the city with everyone else when another group of Gems decided to pay a visit to Earth in their ship.

Personality:

Sadie is generally a pleasant and hard-working individual. Her job consists of working at the Big Donut with Lars, a job that she's stuck by for two years. She cleans up the majority of messes and picks up the slack on behalf of her lazier coworker. She treats her work with a lot of responsibility and takes it seriously, as seen with Steven when she makes him a temporary employee at the Big Donut in Lars' place. Instead of immediately letting him loose, she makes sure he watches the employee videos so that he knows exactly all the store policies he needs to follow. And when Steven tries to add something to the donuts in order to play a prank on Lars, Sadie immediately corrects him for it. She's even seen scolding Lars for sleeping behind the counter, telling him that he could get fired.

While Steven is a regular at the Big Donut, he's also a close friend to Sadie and she seems to genuinely enjoy his company whenever he's around. She lightheartedly teases him, such as when Steven stops by to show off a scar he received on his head that turned out to be a minor scratch. Sometimes, she even behaves more like an older sister towards him. When she, Steven, and Lars go to watch horror movies with Ronaldo, she shows concern over the movies being too much for Steven to handle. She's very supportive and encouraging towards him, such as complimenting his jokes despite not finding them funny herself. Another example is when Steven ends up growing his own watermelons to give away, Sadie gives him money to support him even though he doesn't want it.

And then there's Lars, the person that Sadie interacts with the most. Their relationship goes beyond just coworkers, and despite their frequent arguing, they're implied to be pretty close. A lot of her exasperation towards Lars comes from the fact that he often saddles her with most of the work, shows up late, leaves early, and is generally inconsiderate towards her. But it's shown that Sadie also has feelings towards Lars, as she usually lets him get away with whatever he wants. Sadie tells Steven that she once stood in line for him for seven hours to get a video game for him because he was banned from the store that sold it. When she brought the game to him, she found that he bought her favorite snack for her, and cleaned up his room so that they could play together. It's a night where she felt as though she were special to him. And when he lies to her about a back injury at work so that he can run off with some other friends, she's genuinely hurt and upset by the thought that the night they played video games together didn't mean anything to him at all. It isn't until later on, when they're stranded on an island together, that they actually express their feelings towards one another by kissing.

When it comes to Lars and her feelings towards him, Sadie can turn into somewhat of a pushover. For example, when Steven accidentally makes a mess of the Big Donut and Lars complains about having to clean it up, he immediately tells Sadie to clean it. While she protests about having to clean up Steven's messes before, it doesn't take her long to give in and grab a mop and bucket. Additionally, when Lars hurts his back, she lets him leave early and then only realizes that she can't close the store by herself. And while she scolds him for it later, she actually does let Lars sleep at the counter at work. She even moves around him carefully so that she doesn't disturb him.

Outside of Lars and Steven, Sadie can be a very lonely person. She's not seen interacting with anyone else in Beach City very often, outside of the customers who come into the Big Donut. Her loneliness is hinted at in "Mirror Gem" when Lars talks about his summer plans to meet girls, and Sadie pipes up by saying "well maybe I'll meet a new friend!". It's confirmed later on, when she, Lars, and Steven are stranded on an island that Lars asks her "do you ever feel alone, even with other people around?" that she nods sadly in agreement. It's most likely the reason why she latches onto Lars as strongly as she does, or when she looks happy whenever he calls her "player two", as he's really the only person who treats her as someone important.

While Sadie can be a mature and clear-headed individual, she has her moments where her need for companionship can result in her making some very dangerous and careless decisions. This becomes very clear during her time of being stranded on an island because Steven supposedly lost track of the warp pad that was supposed to take them home. It's later revealed that while she did it with the intention of trying to help Lars and thinking this would be an ultimately good experience for him, she hid the warp pad on her own and essentially kept them all trapped on the island together. And while it wasn't done with malicious intent, she kept them there knowing they would have to fend for themselves and that there was a dangerous Gem creature running loose. There's also the moments where Sadie can be vengeful, such as dumping fire salt on a donut and giving it Lars when she finds out he lied to her. The result ended up with Lars causing lots of fire damage while Sadie had to run after him to fix it.

Much like other Beach City residents, Sadie is mostly unfazed by strange happenings thanks to the Crystal Gems and her friendship with Steven. While her daily routine consists of living out her life and working, she doesn't really question it when Steven decides to whisk her and Lars away to a faraway island via a magical portal. Nor does she seem to mind when Steven brings a pink lion into the store with him. It seems to be a requirement for Beach City residents to accept the strange things that go on around them.

Whenever a situation gets serious, Sadie has a take charge attitude. Even in extreme danger, Sadie will sometimes throw herself into the fray to protect someone else. When stranded on an island, she fights off a powerful Gem monster with a makeshift spear to protect Lars - and wins. When Ronaldo hosted a horror club meeting, she protects Lars again from a supposedly angry poltergeist by knocking him down as he was about to get hit by a flying object. Instead of letting frightening situations get the better of her, Sadie's the type who will attempt to make the best decisions she can and do what needs to be done instead.

Sadie is also someone who cares a lot about how others see her. For example, she complains about her mother to Steven after Steven discovers that Sadie's mom still packs her lunches for her. She complains that it's embarrassing and that she can feed herself, unhappy with being treated like a child. She's also shown to be a little camera shy, as she gets noticeably more awkward when Ronaldo starts to interview her while filming her at work.

All in all, Sadie is a good person, and a hard-working resident of Beach City. There's a loneliness to her as well, that sometimes reaches a point where she can make dangerously bad decisions. But for the most part, she's there to support Steven and be his friend when he's not off on crazy adventures involving Gems or monsters. And when things get rough, she has a strong enough will to overcome it.

Abilities: As Sadie is a normal human, she doesn't have any kind of special abilities. She is physically pretty strong, enough to drive a spear through a large gem creature and incapacitate it. After several days of being stranded on an island, Sadie also knows how to survive in the wilderness with no supplies as well.

Exposition/Introspection:

"It is really beautiful here," Sadie mumbled to no one as she watched the cherry blossoms in the courtyard. Inexplicably ending up in a strange place was always going to be alarming at first, and how she woke up here was really jarring too. But ultimately, Sadie figures that this really isn't the worst place she could be. It was a school, wasn't it? A really lovely-looking one at that. Maybe it'd be a nice experience, at least until she could figure out how to get back home.

What did worry her was the event that happened right before she ended up here. The last thing she remembered was the appearance of a giant hand in the sky that caused the entire city to evacuate. It ended up crashing into Beach City, but Sadie ended up here before she could find out if everyone was okay. Steven especially, since he ran back towards the city. Was he still okay? He was a tough kid, but he was still a kid and who knows what that giant hand was or what it was planning on doing.

She sighs to herself, remembering that she can ask all those questions once she gets back. She'll worry herself to death if she spends all her time thinking about what could have happened instead of focusing on what's happening right now. The situation she's found herself in was weird in itself, and she didn't recognize anyone else here. This didn't look anything like the school she used to go to either, and more importantly...

I haven't even been to school in a few years! What am I even doing here?

Not that she minded a lot, but she felt out of place. She felt like however she got here, someone made a mistake. She wonders what exactly she's supposed to do here, go to classes and try to conquer mountains of homework? It's what she had to do before, but she already finished high school so...

At least she knows what her first homework assignment's going to be. As she turns her head, she sees someone out a little further in the courtyard. An older man who seems to be tending to the plants in the yard.

"Um... excuse me, sir? I need to ask you a few questions!"
